Work Permits

All minors under age 18 (unless a high school graduate or equivalent), including minors employed by parents, (Ed. C. 49141) must have a work permit. All Work Permits expire five (5) days after school starts and must be re-issued at the start of each school year or at the time the student obtains a new job. Work Permits are required all year, not just when school is in session. It serves as an age certificate and states the maximum hours a minor may work based on their age (Ed. C. 49160).

During the school year, Work Permit applications are available in the Career Center at Downey High School or through the link “Work Permits Application” See link “Need a permit when school is closed” for permits during Summer, Winter and Spring breaks

Work Experience

Work Experience (WEX) combines classroom instruction with student (paid) employment. Students work a minimum of 10 hours per week and meet with the Work Experience Coordinator in a classroom setting once a week.

Students in their junior and senior years of high school may be eligible to be in the Work Experience program. Students must find employment on their own prior to enrolling in the course. Work Experience students can work more hours than other minors, earn up to 20 elective credits per year and seniors may be able to have a shortened school day if on track to graduate. See Mrs. Rodrigues (Career Center) for a WEX application.

Employers of Work Experience students must comply with labor laws and regulations concerning Workers’ Compensation Insurance, Social Security, and income taxes.
