Incoming Freshmen meetings

Hello Parents of Incoming Freshman,

Let me start by saying how excited we are to have your family join the Downey High School Family Community.  Transitioning from junior high to high school can bring a fair amount of anxiety and unexpected feelings.  As a Downey Community, we would like to decrease those feelings.  In order to prepare your student for the high school experience, this summer we will be requiring all students new to Downey and their parents/Guardians to meet their school counselor for a 15–20-minute intake meeting. During this time, we will be providing the following opportunities:

  • Discuss future goals

  • Create a four-year high school plan

  • Review A-G requirements to attend a 4-year college

  • Provide resources to enhance academic/social-emotional growth

  • Access to PowerSchool to track grades and attendance

  • Answer any questions to support your student

Given this meeting will be required before your student receives their schedule, we will be offering several dates/times to meet your school counselor who has been assigned to your last name alphabet. We will be offering both scheduled appointments and walk-in times to ensure that we can accommodate your family’s needs. See below for this information.

We are so fortunate and ecstatic to offer this new experience to you and your students. We are confident this bridging event will help to ensure that the next four years at Downey High School are positive and successful. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
